My Health Insurance Company Is Leaving the Marketplace—What Do I Do Next?

A letter saying your health insurance plan will no longer be available can feel alarming. The first step is to find out exactly what is ending—and when—so you can arrange replacement coverage.

Read your notice carefully

An insurer may discontinue one plan, stop offering coverage in your county, or leave a market altogether. Your notice should explain how the change affects your policy.

Keep the letter and look for:

  • Your current coverage’s termination date.
  • Whether a replacement plan has been identified.
  • Any enrollment deadline or action you need to take.

The Marketplace may match you with another plan, but that does not mean its doctors, prescriptions, or costs will match your current coverage. Review the replacement before accepting it.

Make your doctors and medications the starting point

Before comparing prices, write down your primary care doctor, specialists, preferred hospital, and prescriptions—including the dosage and how often you take each medication.

Ask for those details to be checked against the exact plan you are considering. “The office takes that insurance company” is not enough information to establish participation in a particular plan’s network.

If you are receiving ongoing treatment, ask the new insurer about prior authorization and any available transition-of-care arrangements.

Look at the full financial picture

Compare the monthly premium alongside deductibles, office visit costs, prescription expenses, and the out-of-pocket maximum. Also consider any care you already expect to need next year.

Use this practical question: “If I choose this plan, what would a normal month—and a major medical event—look like financially?”

Coordinate the change

For HealthCare.gov coverage, enrolling by December 15 generally allows coverage to begin January 1. Follow the enrollment instructions, pay any required first premium by the insurer’s deadline, and confirm your effective date. State Marketplace deadlines may differ.

Avoid canceling your existing coverage prematurely. Your goal is to coordinate the end of the current policy with the start of the replacement.
