What is Obamacare and do I qualify? Everything you need to know
You’ve probably heard the word “Obamacare” hundreds of times — but do you actually know what it covers, who qualifies, and how much it costs? You might be surprised. Millions of Americans are eligible for free or low-cost health insurance right now and don’t even know it.
The Affordable Care Act — commonly known as Obamacare — was signed into law in 2010 to make health insurance more accessible and affordable. Today, millions of people who are self-employed, between jobs, or without affordable employer coverage can get quality health insurance — often for far less than they expect.
What is Obamacare, exactly?
“Obamacare” is the nickname for the Affordable Care Act (ACA). It created the Health Insurance Marketplace — an online platform where individuals and families can shop for, compare, and enroll in private health insurance plans. The ACA also created financial assistance programs that lower the monthly cost of coverage based on your income.
Who qualifies for ACA coverage?
- U.S. citizen or lawfully present immigrant
- Under age 65
- Not currently incarcerated
- No access to affordable employer health coverage
You don’t have to be unemployed. Many self-employed people, gig workers, small business owners, and part-time workers enroll every year.
What financial help is available?
- Premium Tax Credits: Premium Tax Credits: Reduce your monthly premium — sometimes to $0/month — based on income and household size.
- Cost-Sharing Reductions: Cost-Sharing Reductions (CSRs): Available on Silver plans, reduce your out-of-pocket costs when you use your insurance.
Many of our clients at Simply Health Insurance Agency pay between $0 and $50 per month for health coverage. The financial assistance available through the ACA is significant — and most people don’t realize how much they qualify for until they sit down with a licensed agent.
What do ACA plans cover?
- Doctor visits and preventive care (often at no cost)
- Emergency services and hospitalization
- Prescription drugs
- Mental health and substance use services
- Maternity and newborn care
- Pediatric services including dental and vision for children
When can I enroll?
Open Enrollment runs November through January each year. Outside that window, you may qualify for a Special Enrollment Period (SEP) if you’ve experienced a qualifying life event — losing job-based coverage, getting married, having a baby, or moving to a new area.
- Gather your information: Gather your information: household size, estimated annual income, and zip code.
- Talk to a licensed agent: Talk to a licensed agent: A licensed agent can run a subsidy estimate for you in minutes — for free.
- Don’t assume: Don’t assume you don’t qualify: The only way to know for sure is to check.
- Obamacare (ACA) is available to most Americans under 65 who don’t have affordable employer coverage
- Financial assistance can reduce your monthly premium to as little as $0 — but you have to apply to find out
- A licensed agent can help you compare your options and enroll — for free
